Web Design Software Pick of the Week: Rendera

Rendera
Rendera is an online HTML editor. I found it while I was looking for HTML editors that can edit HTML 5 and CSS 3. This tool does not make a great editor for building entire sites, but if you're looking for a way to test how HTML 5 and CSS 3 tags and properties might look, it's a great tool. You just go in and type up the HTML and CSS you want to see rendered and it will display it in the same window.

Unicorn Will Help you Validate Everything

The W3C announced on July 27th a new all-in-one validator called Unicorn. What's fabulous about this validator is that now you can check your HTML, your CSS, and your RSS all in one place. You just type in your URL (or upload a file or paste in the code you want checked) and Unicorn will check it all for you. One thing I found when validating one site I wrote is that the blog template didn't include the blog's RSS feed in the HTML. I'll definitely need to fix that (and all the other errors it found!!).

Basil Marceaux Sr. – A Good Example of Really Bad Web Design for Friday, July 30, 2010

Submitter’s comments: Here’s one for your slush pile…

Vincent Flanders’ comments: Certainly one of the worst looking political websites I’ve seen. If it weren’t for the fact that he claims to have 13 3/4 years worth of education, I would write off the typos as just a symptom of an Over-the-top Web Site. The following screen shot not only shows the problem, but could also be used as the visual representation of irony:

this is the definition of irony

The candidate’s support of “School violents” reminded me of Emily Litella.

I don’t know what the title of this page should be so I grabbed some text:

U.S. Senate of Zack wamp in 2010

Turns out, according to my commenters, that the person involved in this site is really Basil Marceaux Sr., instead of Zack Wamp.

I’ve heard of interesting campaign promises, but this one may be the best:

VOTE FOR ME AND IF I WIN I WILL IMMUNE YOU FROM ALL STATE CRIMES FOR THE REST OF YOU LIFE! (Except violating a citizen rights this would be a special punishment )

Basil Marceaux Sr.

Oldy But Goody: Centering with CSS

One of the most commonly asked questions I get about CSS is how to center things. It was really easy when we just used the deprecated <center> tag. But trying to do it with CSS can sometimes be very frustrating. That's because CSS treats block-level elements differently from inline elements (except <img />, which is a block-level tag, but it centers like an inline tag). In my centering with CSS article, I teach you how to center anything on your page. I even show you how to center things vertically. And if that's not enough, you can learn how to center a document with a fixed width layout and center a document with a liquid layout.

Poll: What inspires your web design work?

Being a web designer is like any other creative pursuit. Every so often you'll need to recharge the creative batteries. I enjoy brainstorming to help me get unblocked, but I also will get inspiration from nature, my friends, and even books I'm reading. Of course, looking at other websites can be inspiring as well. Some About.com readers have shared their inspirations and you can too. What inspires your web design work?
