Design Means Different Things to Different People

One of the most obvious things to me was the meanning of the word "design". Why would I need to define a word that everyone just knows what it means? But then, I started listing the different ways that the word is used, just within the Web design community, and I realized that this is something that we all know, but no one means exactly the same thing. So I wrote an article about the different meanings of design in our industry: What is Design?

Web Design Software Pick of the Week: BrowserShots

BrowserShots
BrowserShots is one of those programs that seems too good to be true. How can something so useful be free (ad supported)? BrowserShots is an open source online tool that takes screen shots in different Web browsers and uploads them to a central server for you to view. You can view pages in browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, MSIE, and many others. And not just current browsers either. They have test machines with MSIE 4 and 5, Firefox 0.9, and even old ones like Netscape 8.1. When you're testing your pages, BrowserShots is a great resource.

Poll: What Web servers have you used?

There are dozens of different Web servers but the most popular ones tend to be Apache (with Tomcat for SSL), IIS, and the Sun Java Server. At one time or another, I've used all three of those servers, as well as WebObjects, iPlanet (Netscape server), and Sambar server. I've also looked at Zeus and Zope but never run Web pages off them. What Web servers have you used or played with?
